Overview

Renge-ji is a temple of the Omuro branch of Shingon Buddhism, holding the special rank of bekkaku honzan. Located in the Omuro-Onai area of Ukyo Ward, Kyoto, it carries the mountain name Gochisan and enshrines Amida Nyorai as its principal image. Set close to the Omuro district near Ninna-ji, the temple is best loved for its distinctive kyuri-fuji rite, in which illness is sealed into a cucumber and healing is prayed for. It preserves a warm, community-rooted atmosphere amid an area famed for its great temples.

Highlights

  • A calm precinct as a bekkaku honzan of Omuro-branch Shingon, enshrining Amida Nyorai
  • The rare summer kyuri-fuji rite praying for recovery from illness
  • The mountain name Gochisan, evoking the Five Wisdom Buddhas of esoteric Buddhism
  • Fudo devotion as a station of the Kinki Thirty-six Fudoson pilgrimage

History

Temple tradition traces its origins to 1057 in the Heian period, and it has long kept the flame of the Omuro branch of Shingon Buddhism as a bekkaku honzan. Reflecting esoteric Shingon teaching, it bears the mountain name Gochisan, associated with the Five Wisdom Buddhas. It is also known as a station on the Kinki Thirty-six Fudoson pilgrimage, linking it to the wider circuit of Fudo devotion. Across the centuries it has been maintained as a place of prayer, receiving the wishes of ordinary people.

Access

The temple stands in Omuro-Onai, Ukyo Ward, around latitude 35.029 and longitude 135.716, within the Omuro district that spreads before the World Heritage site of Ninna-ji. It sits amid the calm residential neighborhoods of western Kyoto and can be enjoyed together with the nearby sights of Omuro. As visiting hours, rite schedules, and parking may change, it is best to confirm details with official sources before your visit.

Best season

The temple can be visited in any season, though the wider Omuro area is especially serene in the times of cherry blossoms, fresh green, and autumn foliage. Summer, when the kyuri-fuji rite is held, draws visitors praying for good health. Because event dates vary from year to year, checking in advance is recommended if a particular rite is your goal.
