Overview
Jōdo-in is a temple of the Jōdo (Pure Land) school standing in the Ginkakuji-chō district of Sakyō Ward, Kyoto. Its mountain name is Seitai-zan, and it enshrines Amida Nyorai as its principal image. Sitting quietly just north of Jishō-ji—far better known as Ginkaku-ji, the Silver Pavilion—it offers a calm pocket of prayer only a few steps from the busy approach. The temple is renowned for managing the 「Daimonji」 bonfire, one of Kyoto's five great Gozan no Okuribi fires, and is popularly nicknamed the 「Daimonji Temple.」

History
Jōdo-in belongs to the Jōdo school and enshrines Amida Nyorai. Above all, its role in preserving the 「Daimonji」 bonfire that blazes on Mount Nyoigatake in the Higashiyama hills is central to its identity. The nickname 「Daimonji Temple」 grew directly from this connection to the ceremonial fire. Standing immediately north of Jishō-ji (Ginkaku-ji), the temple is rooted in a district steeped in the Higashiyama cultural tradition. For details of its founding, it is best to check official sources when you visit.
Access
The temple lies in Ginkakuji-chō, Sakyō Ward, near latitude 35.027 and longitude 135.798. Because it adjoins Jishō-ji (Ginkaku-ji) directly to the north, it makes an easy stop on the way to the Silver Pavilion. Take a city bus to the Ginkakuji-michi or Ginkakuji-mae stop, then walk toward Ginkaku-ji along the approach or the Philosopher's Path. Please confirm visiting availability and hours through official information.
Best season
As with the wider Ginkaku-ji area, the fresh greenery of early summer and the autumn foliage that colors the Higashiyama hills make for especially pleasant strolling. The temple's presence feels strongest around August 16, the night of the Gozan no Okuribi, when it manages the 「Daimonji」 fire. Visiting while picturing that fiery character glowing over Kyoto's summer sky adds real depth to the experience.

Did you know?
💡 Of the five Gozan no Okuribi fires that light Kyoto's night sky, it is Jōdo-in that manages the 「Daimonji」 blaze on the Higashiyama hills. For this reason locals have long known it as the 「Daimonji Temple.」 Though it sits right beside the bustle of Ginkaku-ji, it remains a quiet, little-known retreat.
