History
The aquarium opened on 14 March 2012 in a corner of Umekoji Park. Because Kyoto lies inland, far from the sea, it became the first aquarium in Japan to adopt a fully artificial seawater system to keep marine fish. Integrated with the greenery of the park, it has also contributed to the revitalization of the historic Umekoji railway district as a new attraction.
Access
The aquarium sits within Umekoji Park in Shimogyo Ward, at roughly 34.98 degrees north and 135.74 degrees east. It lies in the area west of Kyoto Station and is easy to reach on foot or by public transport. For the latest opening hours and admission details, it is best to check the official information before your visit.
Best season
Because the displays are mostly indoors, the aquarium can be enjoyed comfortably all year round. If you want to combine it with a stroll through Umekoji Park, the cherry-blossom season in spring and the autumn foliage are especially rewarding. Summer holidays and weekends can be busy, so allow plenty of time.
