Overview

Sanjichion-ji is a Jodo-shu convent temple in Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto. Enshrining Amida Nyorai as its principal image, it is known as a monzeki nunnery where imperial princesses and noblewomen once served as abbess, and it has long been called by the elegant name Irie-gosho. Standing quietly near the old Imperial Palace, it preserves a chapter of Kyoto's women's Buddhist history.

History

The temple was long led by women of imperial and noble lineage, a hallmark of a monzeki nunnery, and its name recalls the palace observances of the day. Its principal image is Amida Nyorai, and as one of the monzeki temples clustered around the Imperial Palace, it carries a heritage in which courtly refinement and devotion were intertwined. For its detailed founding history and viewing arrangements, please check official information.

Access

The temple lies in Kamigyo-ku, in the area northwest of the Kyoto Imperial Palace (around 35.031 N, 135.757 E). It is within walking distance of Imadegawa Station on the Karasuma subway line, an easy stroll past the greenery of the palace grounds. The surrounding neighborhood is a calm mix of homes and temples; please confirm whether and when visits are permitted via official sources beforehand.

Best season

Spring and autumn pair naturally with a walk around the palace district. Cherry blossoms brighten the imperial gardens in spring and colored leaves in autumn, deepening the quiet mood at the gate. The green shade of summer and the crisp air of winter each have their own charm.
