Overview

Bishamon-dō is a Tendai-sect monzeki (imperially connected) temple in Yamashina Ward, Kyoto, formally called Gohōzan Ankoku-in Izumo-ji. Its mountain name is Gohōzan and its principal image is Bishamonten, one of the Seven Lucky Gods. Counted among the five great Tendai monzeki temples of Kyoto, it is also known as Yamashina Bishamon-dō. Set in a quiet fold of the hills yet close to the city, it blends dignified halls with the colors of the seasons.

Highlights

  • A dignified audience hall and monzeki-style furnishings
  • Maples that blaze along the approach and gardens in autumn
  • Bishamonten, revered for victory and fortune
  • Halls of Gohōzan wrapped in hillside quiet

History

According to temple tradition it was founded in 703 by the monk Gyōki at the wish of Emperor Monmu, originally under the name Izumo-ji. After many changes over the centuries it was reestablished at Yamashina and shaped into a monzeki temple with close imperial ties. Its rank, with abbots drawn from noble and imperial families, still lingers in the audience hall, gardens and refined furnishings.

Access

The temple sits on a hillside in Yamashina Ward, near 35.00 N and 135.82 E. From Yamashina Station, served by JR, subway and Keihan lines, visitors usually walk north, following the canal path to the temple gate. Slopes and stone steps make comfortable shoes advisable. Check official sources for current visiting hours and access.

Best season

Bishamon-dō is celebrated for autumn foliage, when the approach and gardens turn crimson and a carpet of fallen maple leaves spreads underfoot. Spring cherry blossoms and early-summer greenery are lovely too; weekday mornings are best for a quiet visit.
