Overview

Kannon-ji Temple stands in the Ganjoji-machi district of Hitoyoshi, Kumamoto Prefecture, and belongs to the Myoshin-ji school of the Rinzai sect of Zen. Its mountain name is Shobozan, and its principal image is the Sho Kannon. It is counted among the Sagara Thirty-Three Kannon pilgrimage sites and has the quiet air of an old temple.

History

Kannon-ji was founded in 1385 and belongs to the Myoshin-ji school of the Rinzai sect. In addition to its principal image of Sho Kannon, it houses a statue of Shakyamuni Buddha to the right and a statue of Amida Buddha to the left, and it is regarded as one of the Sagara Thirty-Three Kannon pilgrimage sites.

The temple is located in Ganjoji-machi, Hitoyoshi, Kumamoto Prefecture. On road signs it is also written as Kannon-zenji, which can serve as a handy landmark. Please check maps and official information for detailed routes before visiting.
