
Overview
Mount Kunimi is a peak in the Mukō-kiritachi range of the central Kyushu Mountains, rising to 1,739 meters. It is the highest peak in Kumamoto Prefecture and, on the Kyushu mainland, ranks among the leading summits alongside Mount Sobo (1,756 m) and Mount Ichifusa (1,721 m). It is also counted among the 300 Famous Mountains of Japan and the 100 Mountains with First-Class Triangulation Points.

While it is counted among the 300 Famous Mountains of Japan and the 100 First-Class Triangulation Point Mountains, it lies in an area of poor transport access.
Access
The mountain lies across Yatsushiro City in Kumamoto Prefecture and Shiiba Village in Miyazaki Prefecture, in an area with poor transport access.
Best season
Walking a high peak such as this is best suited to seasons when the climate is settled and the ridgelines are easier to traverse.
