
Overview
Sensuikyō is a gorge in Aso, Kumamoto Prefecture, situated on the northern foot of Mount Takadake in the Aso volcanic range. At an elevation of about 900 meters, it commands a sweeping view over the Aso Valley and the northern outer rim of the Aso caldera below. Its name reflects a scenery said to be beautiful enough to intoxicate a mountain hermit.

History
The name Sensuikyō is said to derive from scenery so beautiful that even a mountain hermit would grow intoxicated. Long appreciated as a scenic spot on the northern foot of Mount Takadake, the area has also been served by the Sensuikyō ropeway station.
Access
Located in Aso, Kumamoto Prefecture, the site serves as a trailhead for climbs to Mount Takadake and Mount Nakadake. Nearby lies the Sensuikyō hot spring, a simple thermal spring.
Best season
Spring, when the Miyama-kirishima azaleas come into full bloom, draws especially many visitors. The view over the Aso Valley and outer rim is at its finest on clear days.
