
Overview
Okinoshima is an island belonging to Sukumo City in the southwestern part of Kochi Prefecture on Shikoku. It lies in the Pacific Ocean about 24 km off the coast of Katashima in Sukumo, and is the southernmost point of Shikoku. The island covers 10.02 km² with a coastline of roughly 17 km, measuring about 3.5 km east to west and 5.8 km north to south.

History
The island's old name was most likely 'Imose no Shima.' A former provincial border ran through the island, straddling the historic provinces of Tosa and Iyo. Alternative names recorded for the island include Okinoshima, Tosa-Okinoshima, and Imosejima.
