Overview
Mikurodo is a sea-eroded cave near the tip of Cape Muroto, in Murotomisaki-cho, Muroto City, Kochi Prefecture, known for legends associated with Kobo Daishi (Kukai). Together with the adjoining Shinmeikutsu cave, the two are sometimes referred to collectively as Mikurado.
Highlights
- ●A sea cave carrying legends associated with Kobo Daishi (Kukai)
- ●Paired with the adjoining Shinmeikutsu cave, together called Mikurado
- ●A bangai sacred site near Hotsumisakiji, the 24th Shikoku pilgrimage temple
- ●Recognized as one of Japan's selected '100 Soundscapes'
History
The cave lies close to Hotsumisakiji, the 24th temple of the Shikoku 88-temple pilgrimage, and Mikurodo itself is counted as one of the pilgrimage's bangai (supplementary) sacred sites. Entry was once prohibited due to the risk of falling rocks, but access has since been restored with protective netting and other safety measures put in place (as of May 2021).
Access
The cave is located near the very tip of Cape Muroto and can be reached easily from Hotsumisakiji. Because entry restrictions have been imposed in the past for safety reasons, visitors should check the current status and any entry conditions through official sources before visiting.
Best season
As a coastal rock formation facing the open sea, conditions can change with waves and tides. Extra caution is advised during typhoon season or periods of high swell, and calmer times of year make for a safer, more comfortable visit.
