Overview
Hakone Onsen is a collective term for the numerous hot spring spas in the town of Hakone, Ashigarashimo District, Kanagawa Prefecture, an area formerly known as Sagami Province. Alongside springs that have flowed since the days of old Sagami, it includes newer springs developed through drilling, so that spa districts are scattered from the foot to the mid-slopes of the Hakone volcano. The surrounding area is designated as part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park.

History
Hakone Onsen rests on a group of hot springs that have flowed since the era of old Sagami Province, later joined by springs newly developed through drilling to reach its present form. As a result, spa districts came to be scattered from the foot to the mid-slopes of the Hakone volcano. It is also counted among Japan's Twenty-Five Scenic Sites.

It lies in the town of Hakone, Ashigarashimo District, Kanagawa Prefecture, and comprises several spas including Sokokura, Ubako, Miyanoshita, Ashinoyu and Sengokuhara Onsen.
