History
Mount Kintoki lies in the northwestern part of the Hakone volcano and was once called Inohanadake or Inohanagatake. Kintaro (Sakata no Kintoki), the source of its name, was a legendary strongman said to have grown up among these Ashigara and Hakone mountains, and his name is inscribed on the peak itself. The Inohana Shrine at the summit carries on age-old worship, and the mountain has long been cherished as a noted peak with views of Mount Fuji.
Access
The mountain sits on the border of Kanagawa Prefecture and Oyama in Shizuoka, reached from trailheads in the Hakone area. From the Hakone side, hikers typically combine public transport with the trails, of which several are maintained. As conditions change with weather and snow, check the latest trail and transport information from official sources and prepare proper gear before setting out.
Best season
From autumn into winter, when the air is clear and Mount Fuji stands sharp, the summit view is exceptional. Early summer, bright with fresh greenery, is also a pleasant time to climb. Winter calls for gear ready for snow and ice, so plan conservatively for peace of mind.
