History

Kōmyō-ji has long served as a temple transmitting the teachings of Nichiren Buddhism. Its mountain name Risshōzan expresses the ideal of establishing the true teaching that lies at the heart of the tradition. The temple counted Kuon-ji on Mount Minobu as its former head temple. Fujisawa developed from medieval times as a key waypoint on the Tōkaidō, and many temples and shrines took root in its post-town setting; Kōmyō-ji stands as one thread in that religious heritage. For details of its founding, please consult official sources.

Access

The temple lies in Fujisawa 4-chome, at roughly 35.35 degrees north and 139.47 degrees east. Fujisawa Station, where the JR Tōkaidō Line, the Odakyū Line and the Enoshima Electric Railway meet, is the nearest hub; from there you can reach the temple on foot through the town center. Set within the temple district along the old Tōkaidō, it pairs well with a stroll around nearby Yugyō-ji. Please check official information in advance for visiting hours and access.

Best season

As an urban temple in central Fujisawa, it can be visited calmly through all four seasons. Spring softens the greenery in and around the precinct, while autumn brings clear air ideal for wandering the old temple district. During the height of summer or the deep chill of winter, dress accordingly and choose a comfortable time of day.
