History
Ashika Shima Lighthouse was first lit in 1916, during the Taishō era. It was a time when modern harbors and navigational aids were being developed across Japan, and this lighthouse too was established to safeguard vessels navigating Tokyo Bay. Since then it has illuminated the mouth of the bay for more than a century. For details of its construction, its light characteristic and its range, please consult official sources.
Access
Ashika Shima Lighthouse stands on the water off Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, at roughly 35.21 degrees north and 139.74 degrees east. As it rises on an island, on-site visits are not usual; instead it is generally viewed from the sea aboard ferries crossing Tokyo Bay or pleasure boats touring the surrounding waters. Please check official information in advance for boat routes, operating status and the best ways to view it.
Best season
To view a lighthouse at sea, autumn and winter, when the air is clear and visibility good, along with calm, fine days, are the most comfortable. From spring to early summer the sea breeze is pleasant and the view from the deck is refreshing. Because conditions at sea change readily, check boat operations against the season and the day's sea state for peace of mind.
