Overview

The Enoshima Sea Candle is an observation tower and lighthouse standing on the island of Enoshima in Fujisawa, Kanagawa, and it holds the distinction of being Japan's first privately built lighthouse. Rising about 60 meters within the Samuel Cocking Garden atop the island, it has two viewing decks, an indoor primary deck and an outdoor upper deck, offering sweeping views over Sagami Bay, the Shonan coastline and Mount Fuji. As a working lighthouse that doubles as a sightseeing tower, it is a signature Shonan landmark, rewarding by day with wide panoramas and by night with its glowing illumination.

Highlights

  • About 60 m tall with indoor and outdoor viewing decks
  • Panoramas of Mount Fuji across Sagami Bay
  • Japan's first privately built lighthouse
  • Winter illumination paired with the night view

History

The first lighthouse on the site was erected in 1951, but the present tower was built in 2002 to mark the centenary of the Enoshima Electric Railway. On New Year's Eve 2002, a ceremony transferred the lighthouse duty from the old structure, which was then dismantled, and the observation decks opened to the public on 29 April 2003. In 2004 the tower received a Good Design Award in the Architecture and Environment Design category, recognizing its blend of function and form.

Access

The Sea Candle stands on Enoshima island in Fujisawa, Kanagawa, at roughly 35.30 north and 139.48 east. Reach the gateway to the island via the Odakyu Enoshima Line, the Shonan Monorail or the Enoden railway, then cross the Enoshima Bridge onto the island. From there, climb the sloping approach or take the paid outdoor escalator known as the Enoshima Escar up toward the Samuel Cocking Garden. Check opening hours and deck admission fees via official sources.

Best season

The tower can be enjoyed year-round, but the clear air of autumn and winter dusk, when Mount Fuji stands out sharply, is especially rewarding. In winter, one of Shonan's signature illuminations lights up the tower and garden, letting you enjoy the night view and light displays together. The transition from sunset to night is particularly recommended.

Did you know?

💡 The nickname Sea Candle comes from the tower's slender, candle-like silhouette rising by the sea. Its rare origin as Japan's first private lighthouse, and its role as a working beacon that anyone can climb as an observation tower, add to its appeal.
