Aruka Shrine

Overview

Aruka Shrine has its main sanctuary in Kamigo, Ebina, Kanagawa Prefecture. Though its founding date is unknown, it is celebrated as one of the oldest shrines in Sagami Province, its name appearing in Heian-period records. In recent years it has drawn attention for blending tradition with approachability, with its official character, the Panda Acting Chief Priest, featured on television.

History

Records note its elevation to the Junior Fifth Rank, Upper Grade, in 869, and it is identified with the minor Koza-district shrine Aruka among the thirteen Engishiki shrines of Sagami Province listed in the Engishiki Jinmyocho of 927. At the end of the Edo period it was regarded as the guardian shrine of the five villages of Ebina, and under the modern shrine-ranking system it was designated a village shrine. Today it is a Shinto religious corporation affiliated with the Association of Shinto Shrines.
