Set in green surroundings atop a hill, it is a free-admission park that locals visit casually as a relaxing retreat. Its appeal lies in a walkable scale where you can meet small animals and birds while still being in the middle of the city.

Highlights

  • A free-admission municipal zoo you can drop into easily
  • The green, leafy grounds spread across the Minami-Kase hill
  • An approachable scale for meeting small animals and birds within the city
  • Easy strolling as a hillside park that works with its terrain

History

The zoo opened on November 22, 1972, laid out across the hilly terrain of Saiwai Ward in Kawasaki. Part of its grounds stretches from Minami-Kase 1-chome into Kita-Kase 1-chome, and the park has long made use of this landscape to serve local residents. Since opening it has functioned as a neighborhood park where people can encounter familiar animals up close.

Access

The park sits at Minami-Kase 1-chome in Saiwai Ward, near latitude 35.54 and longitude 139.66. It can be reached by a mix of walking and bus from nearby JR and other rail stations, with an uphill approach since it stands on a hill. For detailed routes and bus services from the nearest station, it is best to check Kawasaki City or the park's official information.

Best season

As a park wrapped in greenery on a hilltop, it is most pleasant during the fresh foliage of spring and the autumn colors. Since it is mainly outdoors, choosing a calm, clear day lets you comfortably enjoy both watching the animals and strolling the grounds.
