Overview

Kurihama Flower Park is a municipal city park in Shinmei-cho, Yokosuka. Its formal urban-planning name is Kurihama Ryokuchi (Kurihama Green Space), and it spreads across roughly 583,000 square meters. Inside are gardens filled with colorful flowers, along with sports facilities and restaurants, and admission is free. Today it welcomes more than 500,000 visitors a year and stands as a leading sightseeing spot of the Kurihama district.

Highlights

  • A free-admission city park spanning about 583,000 square meters
  • Gardens of colorful flowers, plus sports facilities and restaurants
  • The Godzilla slide, a favorite with children
  • Getting around on the locomotive-shaped Flower Bus

History

The land where Kurihama Flower Park stands was once the site of a U.S. military warehouse. After the land was returned, the city of Yokosuka developed it as Kurihama Green Space, transforming it into a park brimming with flowers and greenery. The very journey of former military land becoming a place of rest now bustling with families and travelers is one of the park's great charms.

Access

The park is in Shinmei-cho, Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, in the Kurihama district on the eastern side of the Miura Peninsula, at roughly 35.22 degrees north and 139.70 degrees east. The grounds are large and have significant elevation changes, so getting around on foot can be tiring. To help, a locomotive-shaped Flower Bus runs through the park, making it easy to move about (one-way fares are 300 yen for adults and 200 yen for children, with half price for holders of a disability certificate and one accompanying person). Please check official sources for details on the nearest stations and buses.

Best season

Since colorful flowers are the star here, it is best to time your visit to when the blooms are at their peak. Because the peak differs by type of flower, if you have a particular bloom in mind, it is wise to check the flowering status from official information before you set out. To stroll the spacious grounds at leisure, the milder seasons are especially comfortable.
