Overview

Enkaizan is a 153.3-meter hill in Isogo Ward, Yokohama, forming the northern tip of the Miura Hills. Though close to the city, it is wrapped in green ridgelines and cherished as an easily reachable pocket of nature within the urban area. For many years it was regarded as the highest point in Yokohama, but land surveys later revealed higher spots nearby, including Mount Omaruyama (156.8 m) and the ridge of Mount Ohirayama (159.4 m). There are no flashy attractions here, only a quiet hill made for walking.

Highlights

  • A 153.3-meter green ridge marking the northern tip of the Miura Hills
  • An accessible slice of nature right beside the urban area
  • A history of being cherished as Yokohama's former highest point
  • Views of hill country enjoyed together with nearby Omaruyama and Ohirayama

History

Enkaizan was long known and loved by Yokohama residents as the city's highest point. As surveying advanced, however, it became clear that the true highest peak was nearby Mount Omaruyama, and the highest point was the ridge of Mount Ohirayama. This helped people recognize the whole area as a connected range of hills marking the northern end of the Miura Hills. Modest in elevation, it remains a symbolic hill for understanding Yokohama's terrain.

Access

The hill lies in Isogo Ward, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, at roughly 35.36 degrees north and 139.59 degrees east, at the northern edge of the Miura Hills and within easy reach of central Yokohama. Because the nearest stations, bus services, and trailhead details can change with the season and operations, it is best to confirm the latest information from official sources before you go. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

Best season

The fresh greenery of spring and early summer, and the changing colors of autumn, are the most pleasant times to walk here. The low elevation makes summer walks possible too, but on very hot days be sure to stay hydrated and rest often. In winter the clear air brings many days with good visibility.

Did you know?

💡 Long spoken of as the highest point in Yokohama, Enkaizan eventually yielded that title to the nearby ridge of Mount Ohirayama (159.4 m), while the highest peak turned out to be Mount Omaruyama (156.8 m). The numbers may seem surprising at first, but they are precisely the kind of detail revealed only by patient, careful surveying.
