Overview

Yoronjima is the southernmost island of Kagoshima Prefecture, belonging to the Amami Islands group. It covers an area of about 20.8 square kilometers with a coastline of roughly 23.5 kilometers, and is administered as the town of Yoron. The island has a population of around 6,000 and its highest point rises to 98 meters above sea level. Lying close to the northern tip of Okinawa's main island, Yoronjima shows strong cultural ties to Okinawa alongside its Kagoshima administration.

Highlights

  • Scenery unique to Kagoshima Prefecture's southernmost inhabited island
  • Coastal and marine landscapes protected within Amami Gunto National Park
  • A local culture and dialect shaped by close ties to Okinawa
  • A locally brewed brown-sugar shochu rarely found outside the island

History

A large portion of the island falls within the boundaries of Amami Gunto National Park, reflecting long-standing efforts to preserve its coastal and marine environment. Because of its proximity to Okinawa, the island has historically absorbed Ryukyuan cultural influence, which can still be heard in the local dialect name for the island, "Yunnu."

Access

The island can be reached by air via Yoron Airport or by sea through Yoron Port, making it accessible from both mainland Kagoshima and the Okinawan island chain nearby.

Best season

Agriculture and tourism are the island's main industries, and visitors come throughout the year; those planning to enjoy the surrounding waters may want to time a visit for calmer seasonal weather.
