History
Yorojima is administered as part of Setouchi Town, whose town office sits on the neighboring island of Amami-Oshima, reflecting the close ties among the islands of this stretch of the Satsunan chain. With a population of only around 70, the island has long been home to a small community whose daily life has been shaped by its connection to the surrounding sea and neighboring islands.
Access
A regular ferry runs once a day from Koniya, the main port town of Setouchi, and a water-taxi service is also available from the same port. Visitors from the Kagoshima mainland or Amami Airport typically travel via Amami-Oshima before continuing on to Yorojima.
Best season
As part of the subtropical Amami Islands, Yorojima is prone to typhoons in summer, so spring through early summer or autumn, when the weather is more settled, tend to be easier times to plan a visit.
