Overview
Nagashima Island is one of the Amakusa islands and, together with Moroura Island, Ikara Island and Shishi-jima, forms the Nagashima archipelago, of which it is the main island. It measures roughly 15 kilometers from north to south and 11 kilometers from east to west, covering an area of 90.79 square kilometers, and lies entirely within Nagashima town, Kagoshima Prefecture. Locally it is also known as Nagashima Honto, or simply Honto ("the main island").

History
Since 2006 the island has been administered together with Shishi-jima, Moroura Island and Ikara Island as part of Nagashima town. Lying south of Shimo-shima in the Amakusa island group, its coasts are washed by the Yatsushiro Sea, the Hachimannoseto strait, and the East China Sea.
Access
The entire island falls under Nagashima town, and travel between it and neighboring islands is possible via local ports and bridges. Visitors should confirm ferry schedules or bridge routes in advance when planning a trip.
Best season
Facing both the East China Sea and the Yatsushiro Sea, the island can be affected by typhoons during summer and early autumn, so spring and early summer, when conditions tend to be calmer, are more comfortable times to explore on foot.
