History
Ōno Dake is believed to have formed during the late Pleistocene, though its chronological relationship to the Ata pyroclastic flow of 110,000 years ago remains debated. In 1987 (Showa 62), 24.3 hectares near the summit were designated a forest for living environment conservation, and roads, parking areas, and open spaces were developed as part of Ōno Dake Nature Park.
Access
Hiking trails approach from the south and west, and a spiral automobile road climbs the mountainside to near the summit, making the mountain accessible by car as well as on foot.
Best season
The grassland vegetation near the summit, including pampas grass, changes appearance through the seasons, and a spring event tied to the local new tea harvest is held at the foot of the mountain.
