Overview
Kagoshima City Aquarium is a municipal aquarium in Honkōshin-machi, Kagoshima, Kagoshima Prefecture. Established as a city facility under the Kagoshima Aquarium ordinance, its official name is Kagoshima Aquarium. The aquarium's concept is the "Kuroshio Roman Kaidō."

History
The municipal aquarium opened on 30 May 1997. Its nickname "Io World" was selected from among 9,656 submitted proposals in a public competition, with "io" meaning fish. It is a member of the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums (JAZA).
