Port of Sakurajima is a harbor on Sakurajima and Shinjima in Kagoshima City, Kagoshima Prefecture, established in 1934. It comprises the ferry terminal used by the Sakurajima ferry and port facilities spread across 19 districts on Sakurajima and Shinjima.

History

The port was developed in 1934. Its ferry terminal is managed by Kagoshima Prefecture, while the remaining 19 districts of port facilities are managed by Kagoshima City. According to 2018 statistics, the port handled roughly 3.44 million passengers annually, ranking third in Japan behind Itsukushima Port in Hiroshima Prefecture and Kagoshima Port. Under a law enacted in 1973, the port also serves as an evacuation point for residents and visitors leaving Sakurajima during volcanic emergencies.
