Appi Kogen Ski Resort (APPI) is located in Appi Kogen, Hachimantai, Iwate Prefecture. Its slopes spread across Mount Maemori at 1,305 m and Mount Nishimori at 1,328 m, and it ranks among the largest ski resorts in Japan, with skiing typically possible from early December to early May. Beyond skiing, it functions as a stay-oriented all-season resort with a golf club and a ranch.

History

The resort opened in 1981. Its development was led by Hiromasa Ezoe, founder of Recruit, who commissioned Yusaku Kamekura to serve as art director. Its symbol depicts the four seasons through four triangles, and together with Zao Onsen Ski Resort in Yamagata it is regarded as a representative ski resort of the Tohoku region. It is operated by Iwate Hotel & Resort.

Access

From Morioka Station on the Tohoku Shinkansen, the resort is about 50 minutes by non-stop express bus, and roughly 30 to 50 minutes by car from central Morioka. By expressway it is about 15 minutes from Matsuo-Hachimantai IC and about 20 minutes from Ashiro IC on the Tohoku Expressway.

Best season

Skiing is typically possible from early December to early May, making the winter-to-spring period the main ski season. The long season allows extended enjoyment of winter sports.
