Mount Himekami is a mountain rising 1,123.8 m in Morioka, Iwate Prefecture. Standing apart as an isolated peak with a distinctive pyramid-shaped profile, it is not a volcano but a residual hill of granite intruding through older strata. It is counted among the 200 Famous Japanese Mountains and the New 100 Famous Flower Mountains.

Highlights

  • Well-formed pyramid shape of an isolated peak
  • First-order triangulation point at the summit
  • Unobstructed 360-degree summit panorama
  • View of Mount Iwate, the mountain called "Nanbu Fuji"

History

Rather than being of volcanic origin, the mountain is a residual hill formed from granite that intruded through ancient strata and remained as the surroundings eroded away. It is also known for having been dearly loved by the poet Ishikawa Takuboku, who came from Shibutami at its foot (now part of Morioka). It is listed among the 200 Famous Japanese Mountains, the New 100 Famous Flower Mountains, and the 100 Famous Tōhoku Mountains.

Access

The mountain lies in Morioka, Iwate Prefecture, and its base can be reached from around the Morioka urban area, roughly 20 km north of the city center.

Best season

A relatively easy climb to the summit is practicable from April to November, and clear days with open visibility are best for the views, which include Mount Iwate, Mount Hayachine, and Mount Shichijigure.
