
Overview
Mitsukejima is an uninhabited island in Suzu, Ishikawa Prefecture. Because of its shape it is also known as Gunkanjima, or Battleship Island, and it has become a symbol of the Noto region. It lies within the Noto Hantō Quasi-National Park and is designated a Natural Monument of Ishikawa Prefecture.

History
According to folklore, the island was named "Mitsukejima" by Kūkai — a Buddhist monk, scholar and artist — who is said to have been the first to discover it while travelling from Sado Island. The island is about 150 metres long, 50 metres wide and rises around 30 metres above sea level, and is known as a scenic spot of the Noto Hantō Quasi-National Park.
Access
The island lies off Suzu in Ishikawa Prefecture and can be reached using local transport to the coast.

As a scenic spot where the island's silhouette is viewed rising from the sea, a visit in a season of settled weather makes the view easier to enjoy.
