Mount Sannomine is a 2,128-meter peak rising on the border between Hakusan in Ishikawa Prefecture and Takayama in Gifu Prefecture. Part of the Ryohaku Mountains within Hakusan National Park, it offers grand ridge walking with sweeping views of the Hakusan range. Its name is said to derive from the number three, and it is cherished by hikers as a key point on the traverse toward Mount Haku.

Highlights

  • Grand views of the Hakusan range from 2,128 meters
  • Rich alpine flora within Hakusan National Park
  • A ridgeline standing on the Ishikawa-Gifu border
  • Its role as a waypoint on the traverse to Mount Haku

History

Mount Sannomine lies on the ridgeline leading to Mount Haku, the sacred peak of Hakusan mountain worship, and has long been walked as an important waypoint on routes toward it. As part of Hakusan National Park, its nature is protected, and alpine flowers and expansive panoramas are among its highlights. Trail conditions and mountain-hut information change with the season, so please check official sources.

Access

The peak stands on the prefectural border between Hakusan and Takayama, near 36.09 degrees north and 136.75 degrees east. Climbing routes are generally known from Ichinose on the Ishikawa side and Kamikoike on the Gifu side. As this is a serious ascent of over 2,000 meters, come well equipped and confirm the latest trailhead access and road conditions through official sources.

Best season

The climbing season is best from early summer, when the snow clears and alpine flowers bloom, through summer with its clear vistas, and into autumn when the ridges take on color. Winter brings heavy snow and severe weather, so plan conservatively. Always check the latest weather and snow conditions in advance.
