History
One account holds that the name Utatsu comes from the hill lying to the east of Kanazawa Castle, in the direction traditionally marked as “U-tatsu,” though the actual bearing does not quite match, and several theories exist. The hill has been called by numerous names over the centuries, and Toyokuni Shrine stands on its slopes. From the modern era onward it was developed into a park, transforming into the leafy hill of leisure that visitors enjoy today. For a detailed history, checking official sources is recommended.
Access
The hill sits on the eastern side of central Kanazawa, near latitude 36.57 and longitude 136.68. Reaching it by car from Kanazawa Station, Kenrokuen, or the Higashiyama Higashi district is convenient, and the park contains open grounds and lookout points. For public transport routes and parking details, it is best to check the official information from Kanazawa City or the park in advance.
Best season
Each season has its own character, from cherry blossoms and azaleas in spring to fresh greenery in early summer and the crisp, clear air of autumn and winter. On clear days the view over central Kanazawa is especially beautiful, and a walk here at dusk is highly recommended.

💡 The summit is used as a second-order triangulation point (named “Kanazawa”) by the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan. At only 141 meters it is far from tall, yet it has long been loved as the “guardian hill” watching over the castle town.
