Overview

The Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art stands in Dewamachi, Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture. Set within the leafy grounds of Kenrokuen Garden, it is the prefecture's main art gallery, holding some of Ishikawa's most important cultural assets and works by artists connected to the region. Its collection, built around masterpieces from the Maeda family, is a true highlight.

Highlights

  • A collection centered on the Maeda family masterpieces
  • A setting within the grounds of Kenrokuen Garden
  • Architecture designed by Hiroyasu Tomiie
  • Works by regional artists and cultural assets

History

The gallery first opened in 1959, welcoming visitors in October of that year. As the collection outgrew its original building, a new facility was built, and the current structure was completed in 1983. It was designed by the architect Hiroyasu Tomiie.

Access

The museum is located in Dewamachi, Kanazawa, within the grounds of Kenrokuen Garden. Its setting makes it easy to visit alongside the cultural facilities around the garden. Please confirm the exact route with a map or official information.

Best season

Spring, when Kenrokuen's cherry blossoms bloom, and autumn, when the leaves turn, are ideal for combining a garden stroll with art viewing in a single day. Since only part of the permanent collection is shown at a time, return visits in different seasons are also rewarding.
