History
Renjō-ji's former head temple was the great Myōken-ji in Kyoto, of the Shijō lineage, marking it as a Nichiren temple of distinguished pedigree connected to the Yūshi hōen. As the Kaga domain organized its castle town, many temples were deliberately placed along the foothills of Utatsuyama, and Renjō-ji was one of them, supporting the faith of the community. Its mountain gate, handed down through long history, has been recognized for its value and designated a city cultural property.
Access
The temple lies in Higashiyama at the foot of Mount Utatsuyama, within walking distance of the Higashi Chaya district. From JR Kanazawa Station, a bus toward Hashiba-cho is convenient; the temple cluster is reached by crossing Asanogawa Ōhashi bridge and passing through the Higashi Chaya district. As the area is full of narrow slopes and alleys, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Please check official sources for visiting details.
Best season
Early summer, when the fresh green of Utatsuyama is beautiful, and autumn, when foliage colors the foothills, are especially evocative seasons. If combining with a stroll through the Higashi Chaya district, a quiet morning or the moment after rain lets the stone paving and temple atmosphere shine.

Did you know?
💡 The mountain gate's designation as a city cultural property speaks to the large role this temple has played in local history. Even within Kanazawa, its mountain name and former head temple differ from the Nichiren temples of the Teramachi cluster; its lineage from Fukōzan and Myōken-ji gives Renjō-ji its own distinct character.
