Overview

Myodenji is a Nichiren-sect temple in the Teramachi 5-chome district of Kanazawa, standing within the Teramachi temple cluster. Its mountain name is Shoeizan. Gathered together in the belt of temples that the castle town of Kanazawa placed to its south, Myodenji offers a quiet space for prayer along its approach and grounds. Known for housing a cast bronze three-piece altar set designated a Kanazawa cultural property, it is a temple where the craft culture of Kaga meets living faith.

Highlights

  • A cast bronze three-piece altar set by the first Miyazaki Kanchi, a Kanazawa cultural property
  • A serene Nichiren-sect precinct under the mountain name Shoeizan
  • A quiet prayer space within the Teramachi temple cluster
  • Historical depth where Kaga metalwork meets faith

History

Myodenji belongs to the Nichiren school; its former head temple was Honkokuji of the Rokujo lineage, and it is linked to the Ten-shi dharma lineage. Its cast bronze three-piece altar set was made by Miyazaki Hikokuro Yoshikazu (the first Miyazaki Kanchi), a master metal caster in the service of the Kaga domain, and is designated a cultural property of Kanazawa. Kanchi was famed for crafting kettles for the tea ceremony, and the survival of his Buddhist implements here reflects the high level of Kanazawa's samurai culture and metalwork.

Access

The temple lies within the Teramachi temple cluster in Kanazawa's Teramachi 5-chome, near 36.55 degrees north and 136.65 degrees east. It sits on the Teramachi plateau across the Saigawa River; from the Korinbo or Katamachi area, crossing the Saigawa Ohashi bridge toward Teramachi is the clearest route. As many temples stand nearby, follow each temple's own policy on visits and hours, and confirm details through official information.

Best season

The cherry blossoms of spring and the autumn foliage that color the Teramachi plateau make ideal seasons for quiet temple visits. Combined with a walk along the Saigawa River, they let you savor Kanazawa's changing seasons in a calm setting.
