Overview

Myoho-ji is a Nichiren temple in Teramachi 4-chome, Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture. Bearing the mountain name Dairen-zan, it stands within Teramachi, the temple quarter atop the terrace along the Sai River, where many temples line the streets. It has quietly accumulated its history amid this atmospheric district.

Highlights

  • A Nichiren temple of Teramachi terrace under the mountain name Dairen-zan
  • City-designated Japanese enkianthus spreading behind the main hall
  • Prefecturally designated painted image of Enchiin Myojo on paper
  • Heritage of the Rokujo branch with Honkoku-ji as its former head temple

History

Its former head temple was the great Honkoku-ji in Kyoto, and it belongs to the Rokujo branch and the Yushi lineage. The temple holds a colored-on-paper painted image of Enchiin Myojo, designated a cultural property by Ishikawa Prefecture, conveying the region's history of faith and art. For centuries it has supported Kanazawa's religious culture as one of the Teramachi temples.

Access

The temple is in Teramachi 4-chome, Kanazawa, Ishikawa. It lies within the Teramachi temple cluster reached by crossing the Saigawa-ohashi bridge, convenient by bus from Kanazawa Station or Korinbo. Best season

The city-designated Japanese enkianthus behind the main hall is especially beautiful in spring, when its white flowers bloom, and in autumn, when its leaves turn crimson, offering distinct seasonal faces. Paired with a walk through Teramachi, early summer greenery or late-autumn foliage are ideal.

Did you know?

💡 That the enkianthus behind the main hall is designated a Kanazawa cultural property is a highlight unique to this temple. Together with the prefecturally designated painting of Enchiin Myojo, its possession of two different kinds of cultural property, painting and tree, gives Dairen-zan Myoho-ji its individual character.
