Overview

Utasu Shrine (Utasu-jinja) stands quietly on the edge of the Higashi Chaya district, one of Kanazawa’s celebrated former geisha quarters. Counted among the Five Shrines of Kanazawa, a group of prominent shrines that have stood in the city since the Edo period, it is a place of long-held local devotion. Behind the cobbled lanes and the fine wooden lattices known as bengara-goshi, the shrine grounds offer a calm retreat just a step away from the bustle of sightseeing.

Highlights

  • One of the prestigious Five Shrines of Kanazawa
  • Adjacent to the Higashi Chaya district, ideal to combine with a town walk
  • The history of secretly enshrining domain founder Maeda Toshiie
  • A tranquil precinct framed by cobblestones and wooden lattices

History

According to shrine tradition, Utasu Shrine was founded in 718. In 1599, it secretly enshrined Maeda Toshiie, the founder of the Kaga domain, with retainers contributing offerings in proportion to their stipends. This quiet veneration reflected an era when the domain could not openly worship its founder under Tokugawa rule. Later, when Oyama Shrine was established, the deity Takamimusubi-no-kami that had been enshrined here was transferred there, giving Utasu a deep connection to the Maeda family of Kaga.

Access

The shrine is located in Higashiyama, Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture. It lies along the walking route of the Higashi Chaya district, and from Kanazawa Station a bus toward the Higashiyama area is convenient. Cross the bridge over the Asano River and stroll past the old teahouse machiya, and you will arrive naturally. Please confirm exact transport and visiting hours through official sources.

Best season

Spring and autumn are especially lovely, when the seasons harmonize with the bengara-lattice townscape, and a morning visit in the clear air is recommended. Around the Setsubun festival in early February, the shrine is known for a bean-throwing ceremony featuring the geisha of Higashiyama, giving it a different character with each season.
