History
The Kodokan was the Mito domain school established in 1841, one of the largest academies in Bakumatsu-period Japan. A wide range of subjects were taught here, from Confucianism and national learning to medicine, astronomy, and martial arts, and it became the heart of Mitogaku (the Mito school of thought), exerting great influence on its age. Occupying part of Mito Castle's Sannomaru, it kept its buildings and grounds after its role ended following the Meiji Restoration; the main hall, Shizendo, and main gate are Important Cultural Properties, while the grounds are a Special Historic Site.
Access
It stands in Sannomaru, Mito, Ibaraki (about 36.38°N, 140.48°E), in the same enclosure as the Mito Castle ruins. It is within walking distance of JR Mito Station, an easy stroll from the north exit through the historic district. Pairing it with a visit to the adjacent Kairakuen garden is highly recommended. Best season
Known as a spot for plum blossoms, the grounds burst into bloom in early spring, joining the plums of neighboring Kairakuen to color Mito's spring. The plum festival season is especially rewarding, offering historic strolls in crisp air. The fresh green of early summer and autumn foliage also have a quiet charm.
