Overview

Senba Park is a comprehensive urban park in Mito City, Ibaraki Prefecture, operated jointly by the prefecture and the city. Laid out around the central Lake Senba, it covers a planned area of 84.9 hectares. Promenades encircle the lakeshore, and cultural facilities such as the Museum of Modern Art, Ibaraki and the Ibaraki Prefectural Culture Center dot the grounds, making it a beloved recreational spot for the people of Mito.

Highlights

  • Lake Senba at the heart of the park with lakeside promenades
  • The Museum of Modern Art, Ibaraki located within the grounds
  • Cultural facilities such as the Ibaraki Prefectural Culture Center
  • A vast comprehensive park of 84.9 planned hectares

History

Senba Park opened on April 1, 1965. It was created by developing the area around Lake Senba into an urban park; of its planned 84.9 hectares, roughly 6.4 hectares on the southeastern shore fall under prefectural management. Run cooperatively by the prefecture and the city, it has grown into one of Mito's signature parks, uniting lake, greenery, and cultural facilities.

Access

The park lies in Mito City near 36.36 degrees north and 140.45 degrees east, close to the center of the city. It is within walking distance of JR Mito Station or reachable by bus, making it easy to combine with a stroll through town. Because the grounds are large, the nearest route depends on which facility or entrance you aim for; check official sources for detailed parking and access.

Best season

In spring the cherry blossoms along Lake Senba are lovely and draw many visitors. The fresh green of early summer and the autumn foliage also look striking reflected on the water. Waterfowl gather at the lake year round, so it is pleasant for walking or jogging in any season.
