Overview
Shōjō-ji is a Jōdo-shū (Pure Land) Buddhist temple in Shimoono, Koga City, Ibaraki Prefecture. Its mountain name is Shōjō-zan and its cloister name is Tōji-in. History
In medieval times Shōjō-ji flourished as a danrin, a training seminary of the Fujita branch of the Chinzei school of Pure Land Buddhism, and is said to have nurtured many scholar-monks. In the early modern era, the 41st abbot Tōyo Gentetsu founded a temple of the same name in the Koga castle town, so that two Shōjō-ji temples came to stand side by side. Both were protected as family temples of the Doi clan, the lords of Koga Castle, and their fortunes were closely tied to the ruling house. The dual character of a place of learning and a daimyō family temple defines this temple's long history.
Access
The temple lies in Shimoono, Koga City, Ibaraki Prefecture. The nearest station is Koga on the JR Utsunomiya Line, from which you head out toward the eastern farmland.
