Overview

Myoko-ji is a temple of the Nichiren sect in the Chuo district (formerly Nishitakajo-machi) of Koga City, Ibaraki Prefecture. Its mountain name is Hokozan, and its former head temple was Hokekyo-ji, a great head temple of the Nichiren sect; belonging to the Konishi hoen lineage, it has long carried the Lotus faith in the castle town of Koga. As a Nichiren temple set amid the streets of the old castle town, it offers a calm space where devotion to the daimoku chant still lives.

History

The temple bears the mountain name Hokozan and the temple name Myoko-ji. Its former head temple was the great head temple Hokekyo-ji in Shimousa Nakayama, and it is placed within the Nichiren lineage connection known as the Konishi hoen. Koga long flourished as a castle town and post town, and within that town Myoko-ji made its way as a place of Lotus faith where the daimoku is chanted. The temple lies in the Chuo district of Koga City, Ibaraki Prefecture (around 36.19 degrees north, 139.70 degrees east), within central Koga. It can be reached on foot or by bus from Koga Station on the JR Utsunomiya Line, with historic streets spreading around the station.
