History
The Port of Hitachi has long developed as the maritime gateway of the city of Hitachi. Designated a specified port under the Port Regulations Act and an open port under the Customs Act, it serves as a hub for trade and logistics. On 25 December 2008 it was merged with the nearby ports of Hitachinaka and Ōarai to create the Port of Ibaraki, and the Port of Hitachi was reorganised as the Hitachi district within it. Deeply tied to the story of the manufacturing city of Hitachi, it continues to support the shipping of northern Ibaraki today.
Access
The port lies on the Pacific coast in the city of Hitachi, Ibaraki (around 36.49°N, 140.62°E). It is convenient to reach by bus, taxi or car from the nearest station on the JR Jōban Line. As the surroundings are a port and industrial area, watch for restricted zones closed to non-authorised persons, and enjoy the harbour views from areas open to the public. It is best to check official information in advance for parking and which areas can be visited.
Best season
From spring to autumn, when the sea breeze is pleasant, is the most comfortable time to visit. On clear days the horizon of the Pacific set against the port structures makes a striking scene, and in the morning you can watch the sun rise from the eastern sea. Summer offers the fresh feel unique to the seaside, but on windy days or in rough weather, do not push it and put safety first.

💡 The Port of Ibaraki, to which the Port of Hitachi belongs, is a relatively new framework born in 2008 from the merger of three port districts: Hitachi, Hitachinaka and Ōarai. Knowing that these once separately developed ports were unified brings the history of northern Ibaraki's shipping and industry into fuller relief. The name Hitachi is also a place name closely tied to a globally known corporation.
