History
Opened in 1977, the museum inherits objects passed down through generations of the Mito Tokugawa family. Its former registered name under the Museum Act was the Shōkōkan Tokugawa Museum. On 1 April 2011, when the founding body, the Suifu Meitokukai foundation, was reorganized into the public-interest incorporated foundation The Tokugawa Museum, the institution took its present name.
