Overview

Mount Okukuji-Nantai rises to 653.8 meters on the border of Hitachiōta City and Daigo Town in Kuji District, Ibaraki Prefecture. Often called simply Nantai-san, it is beloved as one of the representative peaks of the Okukuji highlands. On its western side stands a rock wall reaching some 300 meters, and the rugged rock face set against rich forest gives the mountain its dramatic character. A first-class triangulation point marks the summit, from which the ridgelines of Okukuji spread out to reward climbers. Though not tall, it is a popular mountain known for varied trails and fine views.

Highlights

  • The striking rock wall of about 300 meters on the western side
  • The Okukuji ridgeline view from the summit's first-class triangulation point
  • A choice of routes from Saigane, Kamiogawa, or the Fukuroda Falls
  • The thrill of varied climbing despite a height of just 653.8 meters

History

Mount Okukuji-Nantai has long been known as a representative peak of the Okukuji area, and a first-class triangulation point, a key reference for land surveying, is set at its summit. The roughly 300-meter rock wall on its western side is the mountain's great highlight, a natural sculpture carved over long ages. Straddling the border of Hitachiōta City and Daigo Town, it conveys the appeal of this region's mountains alongside famous sights such as the Fukuroda Falls.

Access

The mountain lies on the border of Hitachiōta City and Daigo Town in Ibaraki Prefecture. Trailheads start from Saigane or Kamiogawa stations on the JR Suigun Line, and a route from the direction of the celebrated Fukuroda Falls is also maintained. The appeal is that you can set off on foot from the stations, but because conditions change with season and weather, please confirm routes, times, and parking through official sources or a hiking map in advance.

Best season

The dazzling fresh green of spring to early summer and the autumn foliage season, when the slopes take on color, are ideal for climbing. Because routes including the western rock wall have steep, rugged sections, avoid rainy or icy periods and go well equipped. Choose a day with stable weather and plan within your ability.
