Overview

Yumura Onsen is a hot spring in Shin'onsen town, Mikata District, Hyogo Prefecture, set in a quiet mountain valley of the eastern San'in region. Local tradition holds that the springs were uncovered in AD848, giving the resort a long history. Known as a tranquil hot-spring retreat, it is also one of the major geosites of the San'in Kaigan Global Geopark.

History

Local legend states that the hot springs were uncovered in AD848 by the priest Jikaku Daishi. The town is said to have been inhabited since that time, and the local temple is claimed to have been built soon after the discovery of the springs. Its scenery became known nationwide as a filming location for the 1981 NHK drama Yumechiyo Nikki, and it has since also been called the home of Yumechiyo.

Access

Located in the Yu district of Shin'onsen town, Mikata District, Hyogo Prefecture. Set in a valley of the eastern San'in region, the hot-spring quarter is reached from the surrounding area.

Best season

The retreat's atmosphere can be enjoyed year-round. Winter, when the steam rises visibly, carries a charm particular to this hot-spring town.
