
Overview
The Naruto whirlpools are tidal whirlpools that form in the Naruto Strait between Naruto in Tokushima and Minami-Awaji in Hyōgo. During spring tides the vortices are said to reach up to 20 meters in diameter, among the largest in the world. The natural spectacle can be viewed from either shore of the strait.

History
In the Naruto Strait, the difference in tide levels between the Inland Sea and the Kii Channel speeds up the water rushing through. Where this fast current meets the surrounding water, whirlpools form. The landscape has been selected among the 100 Landscapes of Heisei.

The whirlpools occur in the Naruto Strait between Naruto in Tokushima and Minami-Awaji in Hyōgo, and can be viewed from either shore.
Best season
Since the whirlpools grow largest at spring tide, visiting when the tidal conditions align makes for the most striking view.
