Overview

Takisato Dam is a gravity-type concrete dam built across the middle reaches of the Sorachi River, part of the Ishikari River system, in Ashibetsu City, Hokkaido. Standing 50 meters high, it is administered by the Sapporo Development and Construction Department of the Hokkaido Regional Development Bureau as a designated multipurpose dam.

Highlights

  • A close view of the 50-meter-high gravity concrete dam structure
  • The calm surface of Lake Takisato set against surrounding mountains
  • A flood-control facility built in direct response to the 1981 Ishikari River flood
  • The newest dam on the Sorachi River's main stream, of interest to civil engineering enthusiasts

History

The dam was planned in response to the major Ishikari River flood of 1981, with the aim of controlling flooding along the middle and lower Sorachi and Ishikari rivers while securing a stable water supply for the Sorachi region. Completed in 1999, it is the most recently built dam on the main stream of the Sorachi River. The reservoir it created is known as Lake Takisato.

Access

The dam sits within Ashibetsu City in central Hokkaido. Public transport options nearby are limited, so visitors are encouraged to check the latest access details and visiting conditions through the Hokkaido Development Bureau or Ashibetsu City's official information before heading out.

Best season

Lake Takisato changes appearance through the seasons, with rising snowmelt water in spring and colorful foliage reflected on the water in autumn offering particularly scenic moments. Winter road conditions can be challenging, so it's worth confirming current conditions before a visit.
