Overview
Tokachi Millennium Forest is a garden in the town of Shimizu, Kamikawa District, Hokkaido. Woodland and gardens spread across a vast site, and it is counted as one of the gardens making up the Hokkaido Garden Way, a route linking several gardens.

History
The project was initiated by newspaper owner Mitsushige Hayashi, who in 1990 bought about 400 hectares in Tokachi with the aim of offsetting the carbon footprint of his newspaper, the Tokachi Mainichi, and creating a public park. The name reflects the intention of making a garden meant to last a thousand years; it was designed by Dan Pearson, with Midori Shintani as head gardener.
