Overview

Yubarisyuparo Dam is a multipurpose dam built on the upper reaches of the Yubari River, part of the Ishikari River system, in Yubari City, Hokkaido. It stands 110.6 meters high with a crest length of 390 meters.

Highlights

  • A large dam body standing 110.6 meters high with a 390-meter crest length
  • The expansive Lake Shuparo, covering roughly 1,500 hectares when full
  • Multipurpose functions spanning flood control, irrigation, water supply, and power generation
  • The historical background of having submerged the former Ohyubari Dam during its construction

History

The area now submerged by the dam once held the Ohyubari Dam, an agricultural dam built by the Hokkaido Development Bureau to irrigate farmland along the Yubari River. That earlier dam was submerged at the same time Yubarisyuparo Dam was completed, effectively taking on the role of its sediment-control dam. Construction began in 1991 and finished in 2014. The reservoir created is known as Lake Shuparo.

Access

The dam is located within Yubari City, Hokkaido. Public transport in the area is limited, so visitors are advised to check the latest access details and visiting conditions through Yubari City or the Hokkaido Development Bureau's official information.

Best season

Lake Shuparo spreads into a wide expanse of water when full, and the seasons when surrounding mountains show fresh green or autumn foliage are considered especially scenic for viewing. Winter road conditions require caution, so checking current road information in advance is recommended.
