Overview

Ryutaku-ji is a temple of the Soto Zen sect located in the Atsuta-Kotan area of Ishikari City, Hokkaido, also written with an alternate character as "Ryusawa-ji." Standing over the coastal community facing Ishikari Bay, it has long been tied to the daily life of local residents.

Highlights

  • A tranquil Soto Zen temple carrying on its founding traditions
  • A history stretching back to its founding in 1861
  • A local anecdote about once holding the settlement's only well
  • A setting nestled in the coastal Atsuta community facing Ishikari Bay

History

The temple is said to have been founded in 1861, and it has since served as a spiritual anchor for the community. Before piped water reached this coastal area, securing drinking water in Atsuta was notoriously difficult, and the temple grounds held the only well in Kotan. Local lore recalls long lines of residents carrying pails and buckets whenever rice was being cooked or during dry spells.

Access

The temple is located in the Atsuta-Kotan district of Ishikari City. Access is mainly by car from central Ishikari or Sapporo, as public transport options in the area are limited; it is advisable to check current schedules before visiting.

Best season

Given the climate along Hokkaido's Sea of Japan coast, spring through autumn, when snow is minimal, is the easiest time to visit. Summer brings pleasant sea breezes and greenery, while winter requires caution for snow and icy roads.
