History
Founded in 1989, the museum opened on May 3 of that year. Designed by the world-renowned architect Kisho Kurokawa, the building received the Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ) Prize. As the first public museum in Japan dedicated to contemporary art, it has continued to present postwar and contemporary works from a city marked by the history of the atomic bombing. Together with its elevated setting on Hijiyama hill, it has been a cultural landmark ever since its opening.
Access
The museum is located within Hijiyama Park in Minami-ku, Hiroshima City (around 34.39°N, 132.47°E). Hijiyama, a green hill east of central Hiroshima, is a much-loved park close to the city center. As public transport routes, opening hours, and closed days may change, please confirm the museum's official information before your visit.
Best season
As an indoor museum it is comfortable to enjoy year-round, but spring, when the greenery and cherry blossoms of Hijiyama Park are at their best, and autumn, when the trees turn color, are ideal for combining the galleries with a stroll through the park. Even on hot summer days or cold winter days, you can quietly engage with contemporary art indoors.
