History
Because it ranked as the seventh-tallest dam in Japan among those completed before World War II, it has been selected by the Japan Society of Civil Engineers as one of the "2000 Selected Important Civil Engineering Structures" under its Civil Engineering Heritage program. Together with the Odomari Dam on the Takiyama River and the Tarudoko Dam on the Yuragi River, it is collectively known as one of the "Three Dams of the Ota River," reflecting its role in the region's power supply history.
Access
The dam stands in a mountainous stretch of Uchinashi in Akiota-cho, at the far upper reaches of the Ota River's main stream. The reservoir it forms, Lake Ryujin, spans both Akiota-cho and Hatsukaichi, and the dam and lake can be viewed from surrounding roads. Visitors should check official information from Chugoku Electric Power for access details before heading out.
Best season
As a mountain reservoir, the dam is scenic in the fresh greenery of spring and the autumn foliage season, when the surrounding slopes frame the water. In winter, snow and icy roads are possible, so visitors should prepare accordingly.
